Barbara was born in New York City in 1935. During her father’s military service in World War II, her parents decided the children should grow up in Virginia with their grandparents while their mother worked in Washington D.C. After the war, Barbara’s family moved to a tobacco farm in Darlington Heights, just outside of Farmville.
